The Research Assistant provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Assistant to join our group. Must be able to interact and communicate effectively with team members and other investigators in the institute, perform specialized laboratory research using in vitro cells and in vivo animal models. Responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. HJF is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator II to perform clinical research and patient treatment in conjunction with one or more specified clinical research protocols. Supervised by either a Clinical Site Manager or designee.
This position will be in support of Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) located at WRNMMC in Bethesda, MD. The Clinical Research Coordinator II will primarily support the HIV Natural History Study. This is a longitudinal epidemiological, observational, open cohort study collecting retrospective and prospective data in the U.S. Military active duty and Department of Defense (DoD) health care beneficiary HIV infected population.

HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the laboratory of Dr. Irwin Lucki with the Department of Pharmacology located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD.
The incumbent will be part of a Department of Defense (DoD) funded project to study the pharmacological and behavioral effects of ketamine and the ketamine metabolite 2R,6R-hydroxynorketamine (HNK) in rodent models of pain and psychiatric disorders. The project aims to demonstrate the efficacy of ketamine and HNK in rodent models of acute and chronic pain tested under conditions relevant to military medical use. The broad interests of the laboratory are to develop novel drugs (like HNK) for clinical treatment of stress-related disorders, such as depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that frequently occur with acute and chronic pain.
USU is the federal military medical university in the suburbs of Washington DC. We are located on the grounds of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, across the road from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. The incumbent will be hired by HJF. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU.

HJF is seeking a Senior Data Operations Manager, Data Coordination Center to assist the Chief of Data Operations in overseeing and ensuring accountability for all clinical data management activities within Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program's (IDRCP) Data Coordination Center (DCC). This includes, but is not limited to, the direct supervision and oversight of the DCC functional Team Leads and staff and assisting with DCC engagement with IDRCP’s Center Operations committee and Science Directorate leadership. In addition, the Senior Manager, under the direction of the Chief of Data Operations, will assist with clinical data management and data processing planning and function, including direction of human and system resources and processes. A primary objective of this position will be ensuring the delivery of high-quality data for each research protocol.
The IDCRP was founded in 2005 under an interagency agreement between the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and through a cooperative agreement with HJF. IDCRP’s work is executed through a unique, adaptive, and collaborative international clinical research network. This network directly affects force readiness by advancing clinical practice and informing health policy for military personnel.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) is one of the nation's oldest and most highly regarded, academic-based organizations dedicated to advancing trauma-informed knowledge, leadership, and methodologies. The Center's work addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from the consequences of combat, operations other than war, terrorism, natural and humanmade disasters, and public health threats, as well as risk and protective factors associated with suicidal behaviors. CSTS is a part of our nation's federal medical school, Uniformed Services University (USU), and its Department of Psychiatry. The Department has active research programs in the Basic and Clinical Sciences and Neurosciences. HJF is seeking a Physiological Data Modeling Computational Research Scientist III. This position will be in support of Biotechnology High-Performance Computing Software Applications Institute (BHSAI). The mission of the BHSAI is to perform interdisciplinary research, combining physical, computational, and life-science research, to improve the efficiency and efficacy in the development of militarily relevant medical products for Force Health Protection.
Research in this area focuses on the development of individual-specific mathematical models and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for preventing non-battle injuries, optimizing and enhancing Soldier performance, and optimizing casualty care.
Research efforts in this area support military operational medicine and combat casualty care missions. For operational support, we are developing phenomenological, first-principle, and data-driven adaptive mathematical models to provide Soldiers with tools to assess the risk of head or cold injuries, acute mountain sickness, or alertness impairment under operation conditions, as well as evidence-based countermeasures to mitigate such risks. For casualty care, we are developing hardware and software platforms, as well as artificial intelligence-based decision-support algorithms, to improve the management of combat casualties in pre-hospital and in-hospital settings.

This position will be in support of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, Operationally Relevant Infections Department at the Naval Medical Research Command to provide scientific support to the Immunology Branch. The Immunology Branch performs research and leads development of preclinical enteric animal models to serve as tools for combatting antimicrobial resistant enteric infections, as well as supports a number of products under clinical evaluation. As a member of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, the incumbent will work directly under the programmatic and scientific supervision of the principal investigators (Drs Renee Laird and Frederic Poly) to develop, conduct and manage research projects targeting interventions like vaccines and immunoprophylactic products for the prevention of diarrhea caused by bacterial enteropathogens including ETEC, Campylobacter jejuni, EAEC and Shigella spp. The candidate will investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of immunological and microbiological scientific principles and concepts to products under development.

The impact of sleep restriction on current military and veteran populations is significant. The incumbant will examine how sleep restriction will alter the stress axis and cognitive outcomes. HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow - Bioinformatics to perform bioinformatics and data science research. This position is in the Data Science Division in the Center for Military Precision Health at the Uniformed Services University, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Wilkerson (see https://www.usuhs.edu/node/122544 ).
The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct applied bioinformatics research on cancer genomics and/or on characterization of models of human disease, depending on research interests, and develop manuscripts. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also perform research in team science collaborations, such as in the Applied Proteogenomics and Organizational Learning and Outcomes (APOLLO) program, which provide opportunities for skillset and career growth (see https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36384096/ and https://proteomics.cancer.gov/news_and_announcements/apollo-researchers-uncover-novel-proteogenomic-features-lung-cancer). HJF is seeking a Serology Medical Technologist I to support the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB) located at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to DCB. The position requires American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification.
The incumbent will perform assays/procedures in strict accordance with the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Policies, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), accrediting bodies, and U.S. regulatory agencies to include the CAP, DoD Clinical Laboratory Information Program (CLIP), and the U.S. FDA. The incumbent is responsible for preparing and analyzing samples, operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art instrumentation, and ensuring adherence to all quality control procedures in support of clinical diagnostic and clinical research initiatives.
