Join the HJF Team!   HJF is seeking a Physiological Data ModelingComputational Research Scientist II to support the Biotechnology High-Performance Computing Software Applications Institute (BHSAI). The mission of the BHSAI is to perform interdisciplinary research, combining physical, computational, and life-science research, to improve the efficiency and efficacy in the development of militarily relevant medical products for Force Health Protection.    Research in this area focuses on the development of individual-specific mathematical models and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for preventing non-battle injuries, optimizing and enhancing Soldier performance, and optimizing casualty care.   Research efforts in this area support military operational medicine and combat casualty care missions. For operational support, we are developing phenomenological, first-principle, and data-driven adaptive mathematical models to reduce the risk of heat injuries and improve mental activity in response to sleep deprivation. Join the HJF Team!   This Postdoctoral Fellow position in the School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Bethesda, Maryland) will be responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team, under the direction of Dr. Regina Armstrong, Chair of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics. The person selected for this position will conduct research in experimental models and human postmortem brain tissues to screen therapies to promote regeneration and plasticity to protect against neurodegeneration and chronic symptoms associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related clinical conditions.    This position will be located in the School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The research team values a collaborative environment that supports diverse team members conducting multi-disciplinary research. We are examining mechanisms of neuroregeneration and neurodegeneration to identify therapeutic targets for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and evaluating candidate therapeutics for repurposing to TBI as a new clinical indication. CIMC is a Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), focused on T-cell-mediated immunity and its functions, primarily against intracellular pathogens like HIV. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MPS.   The Research Scientist will: serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team of investigators, clinicians, and graduate students; develop and conduct research projects pertaining to military mental health and suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention; investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential interventions, programs, and problems; and contribute to the development of new research protocols.    This position will be in support of The Suicide CPR Initiative, previously known as the Laboratory for the Treatment of Suicide-Related Ideation and Behavior, established in 2006. Dr. Holloway, the Director of the Suicide CPR Initiative, is a clinical psychologist and an intervention scientist who is primarily interested in developing and empirically evaluating novel interventions for suicide risk reduction. The Suicide CPR Initiative is strategically in a unique position to focus on the problem of military suicide, given its origins at USU and its established partnerships with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, as well as national and international collaborators and stakeholders. Overall, the mission of the Suicide CPR Initiative is threefold: CARE: To develop effective interventions targeted at reducing suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors; PREVENTION: To save lives through education, intervention, science, and advocacy; RESEARCH: To advance suicide intervention science and practice.    This is a 1-year position, with the possibility of extension given funding availability and the ongoing needs of the program.   Note: This site requires that the incumbent has lived in the US for three out of the past five years.    The Henry M. Analyzes, designs and develops software enhancements and new module. Manages development project from initial design through testing while providing strategic management direction.    This position will be in support of the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA.  Service members with injuries often require numerous doctor visits to diagnose and treat the symptoms following their injuries. In particular vestibular dysfunction, sleep disorders, and cognitive issues often occur in this population. Rehabilitation for these patients with insomnia or concussion, can be a long and expensive process. It is necessary that we find better ways to prevent, diagnose, assess, and provide more effective treatments that are available to Service members in a wider range of settings, including clinics, deployment sites and even within the home.   The Henry M. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.   The research projects, which aim to elucidate the impact of circadian disruption, immunological alterations, and the rewiring of metabolic components in response to environmental exposures in patients by using biospecimens, are as follows:   1) Profile hormonal and metabolic indicators of diurnal cycle or sleep disruption and elucidate the molecular mechanism(s) of circadian dysfunction impacting prostate cancer.   2) Define the signatures of exposure to environmental carcinogens and xenobiotic compounds that alter the genomic, proteomic, and metabolic landscape of prostate cancer patients.   3) Characterize the immunologic status (chemokines and cytokines in the serum) and the lymphocyte repertoire in the development of prostate cancer and in response to environmental exposures.   The Research Assistant(s) will be responsible for supporting and carrying out groundbreaking research projects within a multi-disciplinary research team consisting of postdoctoral fellows, scientific investigators, and clinical leaders. Candidates should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, genetics, or biology. Knowledge of in vitro cell culture models, genetic modifications (siRNA, shRNA, CRISPR), DNA damage repair, immunoassays (multiplex ELISA) is preferred. Experience in basic statistical and bioinformatics analysis (using R or Python) and multi-omics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics) is desirable. Career building opportunities include development of scientific writing, presentation, and leadership and management skills in a collaborative research environment.
