HJF is seeking Summer Program Junior Instructors to plan instructional activities to include, but not limited to, lectures, class discussions, demonstration labs, and projects. The incumbent will, with the assistance of more experienced Instructors, prepare and deliver lessons in order that students increase knowledge of a specific subject (e.g. anatomy), provide guidance and mentorship to students, and teach various courses and workshops to students.

 

This position will be in support of the Graduate School of Nursing (GSN), located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). We invite applications for the position of Lead Instructors and Junior Instructors for the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers Program. This position is located at USUHS, working with the GSN Assistant Dean for Students. The Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program provides students from under-resourced middle schools with a supportive STEM-enrichment educational experience. Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers is aligned with project-based learnings taken from real world challenges, and invites STEM exploration, career exploration, and personal development.

 

This is a full time, 3-week summer program scheduled to begin on June 24, 2024 and end on July 12, 2024. Selected candidates will be required to undergo a week of training scheduled on 6/12, 6/13, 6/14, 6/17, and 6/18. There is also one week of mandatory close out activities from 7/15-7/19.

 

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan for instructional activities to include, but not limited to, lectures, class discussions, demonstration labs and projects.
  • Teach various courses and workshops to students.
  • Attend both fall 2024 and spring 2025 academic year recruitment events.
  • Provide supervision to program attendees. Support program policies, procedures and safety protocols for youth program.
  • Partner with other program staff to provide a fun, safe and exciting program experience to attendees.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Degree or GED required and must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a two-year or four-year degree in a STEM program.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to help program attendees grow in character, experiences and insights.
  • Ability to portray enthusiasm while displaying flexibility and remaining calm with youth attendees For STEM programs, working technical knowledge and ability to integrate technology into course delivery.
  • Ability to teaching in a multicultural setting.

Physical Capabilities 

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place in both a classroom and laboratory setting.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
