HJF is seeking a Nurse Case Manager (NCM) to support the John P. Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MCC. U.S Citizenship is required. Must have an active nursing license in the state of Maryland or compact license.

 

The incumbent will work as a Nurse Case Manager for MCC orthopaedic oncology cancer patients. The NCM will navigate the patient with interdisciplinary care such as Orthopedic Oncology, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Hematology Oncology. The NCM will be focused on developing an integrated center of excellence for orthopaedic oncology within the MCC and serve as a liaison for care coordination within the National Capital Region (NCR).

 

The John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer- trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military  Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies. The Nurse Case Manager (NCM) serves as a consistent care coordinator to eligible beneficiaries at the Murtha Cancer Center WRNMMC, ensuring timely access and seamless coordination of services throughout the continuum of cancer care.

 

The NCM will be an integral part of and professional member of the Interdisciplinary team promoting optimal patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with patients and families to provide emotional support and guidance following the diagnosis of cancer through end stage disease if necessary.
  • Provide medical information, education, and share knowledge regarding internal and external support services and resources. 
  • Responsible for facilitating rapid scheduling, coordination follow-up care, and tracking patients to ensure completion of recommended treatment plan. 
  • Identify and assist patients and families in eliminating potential barriers to care by identifying and referring to appropriate resources.
  • Extract demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from DoD electronic and paper clinical data systems.
  • Assist in development, testing, and revision of Project/Investigation Forms (case report forms, data extraction tools, etc.).
  • Assist with generation of missing data elements summary.
  • Communicate with data sources to request and obtain missing data elements.
  • Receive, process, file, and incorporate into investigation database missing elements.
  • Perform data entry.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN required, certification as CCRC or CCRP preferred.

 Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in data acquisition and clinical responsibilities related to research protocols
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Research and or Public Health experience highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with VA/DoD Healthcare and health information systems.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a hospital setting.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
